Please join APT WGLC for a noon Zoom presentation to review identification, testing, and repair methods for steel and cast iron.

Existing structures pose their own set of unique challenges that new construction never encounters.  Yet engineers and architects are often called upon to provide advice and direction when very little is known about the building they’re working on.  Original drawings get lost, damaged, or discarded.  We have a responsibility to assess what is there, and to know what options are available for modifying it once we do.  This session will cover:

    • Testing for steel grades
    • Weldability on steel and cast iron
    • Options for modification (including cast iron)
    • Uses of AISC Design Guide 15 (Rehabilitation and Retrofit Guide)

Bill Ipema, SE, PESenior Associate II

Bill Ipema is a Senior Associate at Klein and Hoffman with over 18 years’ experience in adaptive-reuse projects – those that combine new design with historic structures. This area of practice has allowed him to combine his passion for the design of structures with his curiosity of historic construction, forensics, and research. Working in Chicago and the Midwest provides ample opportunities for investigation: from cast iron, wrought iron, and rail steel to concrete and clay tile, from heavy timber to load bearing masonry, from stacked foundations to hand-dug caissons. Bill has successfully worked with them all to bring his client’s visions into reality. He has a special affinity for steel and the ways it can support the world around us. Cast iron in particular has unique challenges that come with its often-beautiful form, which he has studied, investigated, and designed for.

    Allison Toonen-Talamo, Associate III

Allison is an Associate at Klein and Hoffman and serves under the architectural and building enclosures team. Within the firm, she utilizes investigative procedures, historical review and research, technical development, condition assessments, and construction administration services, for various Chicago structures including historic Landmarks, residential, commercial, and municipal buildings. Allison serves and holds leadership positions with various organizations locally, statewide, and nationally. She recently received the 2020 American Express Aspire Award presented by the National Trust and has been listed as one of 2021 Landmarks Illinois 50Forward Influencers.
